Tell somebody in a gym that you have stopped eating carbohydrate and you will get the look.
It is the look normally reserved for a man who has announced he is selling the house to follow a band. Then comes the line, delivered with the serenity of settled science. You cannot build muscle without carbs.
It is the single biggest thing keeping lifters away from eating this way, and it is wrong. Not wrong in a nuance-of-the-literature way. Wrong in the way that a flat earth is wrong.
Yes, you can build muscle without carbohydrate. Muscle growth is driven by mechanical tension and protein, not by carbs. Heavy sets are powered by fuel already sitting inside the muscle, and the small amount of glucose you do use, your liver manufactures on demand.
That is the conclusion. The rest of this page is the working, because a conclusion you cannot defend at a barbecue is not much use to anybody.
Where the “you need carbs” idea came from
It came from endurance sport, and there it is perfectly true.
A cyclist riding hard for three hours really does drain muscle glycogen towards empty, and really does ride better having eaten a mountain of pasta the night before. That research was excellent. It was widely publicised. Then it escaped its enclosure.
Somewhere along the way, long continuous efforts run on glycogen became exercise runs on carbs, which became muscle needs carbs. Three different claims. Nobody checked the joins.
The supplement industry had no reason to check them either. There is a great deal of money in a tub of powdered sugar with a lightning bolt on the front, and precisely none in telling people their liver already does that job for free.
What actually powers a heavy set
Pick up a weight you can lift five times. The whole event lasts about fifteen seconds.
Fifteen seconds is far too short a window for anything you ate to reach the scene, so the body does not wait for it. The set runs on fuel already loaded inside the muscle, the ATP and creatine phosphate sitting on the shelf for exactly this purpose.
Then you rack the bar and stand about for three minutes, considering the ceiling. That is when the shelf gets restocked, and restocking is an aerobic process. It runs on oxygen and fat. You have a great deal of both, and neither of them arrives in a banana.

Read down that table and the argument settles itself. Everything in the top half is what a strength programme is made of. The bottom half is a different sport wearing the same shoes.
How much glycogen does lifting actually use?
Less than the internet believes.
A long bodybuilding session, high reps and short rests, takes a serious bite out of the tank. A low-rep session with three minutes between sets barely marks it, mostly because you spend the bulk of the hour standing still. You are carrying several hundred grams of glycogen about with you. A heavy session spends a modest fraction of it, and you were going to remake that anyway.
There is a neat irony here. The training style that most needs carbohydrate is the training style that most needs rethinking. The four-day plan on this site is built the other way round. Few sets, taken close to failure, with proper rest between them. It is more effective, and it happens to be almost free of the fuel problem people worry about.
Your body makes glucose whether you eat it or not
This is the part the pasta lobby leaves out. Glucose is essential. Eating glucose is not.
Your liver builds it on demand out of protein, out of the glycerol backbone of fat, and out of the lactate your set just produced and sent over. The process is called gluconeogenesis, it runs continuously, and the important detail is that it is led by demand. The liver makes what has been asked for. It does not flood you with glucose because you ate a steak.
Meanwhile the demand itself shrinks. Once ketones are in circulation, the brain hands a large part of its fuel bill over to them, so there is less glucose left to manufacture in the first place. The system does not merely cope without dietary carbohydrate. It quietly downsizes the requirement, which is a thing it has been doing for every ancestor you have ever had, through every winter before agriculture.
So the question was never whether you can train without eating carbohydrate. The question is whether the small amount of glucose your training needs is better bought in a shop or made at home. On a meat-based diet it is made at home, out of the same steak already supplying the amino acids to build the muscle. One box, one delivery, nothing to pay.
What actually tells a muscle to grow
Two things, and neither of them is a carbohydrate.

The first is mechanical tension. A hard set taken close to failure, then repeated with more weight next time. That is the signal, and without it nothing else in your diet matters, which is why nobody in history has eaten their way to a bigger back.
The second is protein, and specifically the leucine in it, which flips the switch that starts the building. Animal protein carries leucine in quantity and in the right company, which is why meat, eggs and dairy do this job without any explaining, and why plant protein needs a bigger serving and a paragraph of context.
Insulin gets credited as a third driver and it is not one. It is permissive rather than driving. Helpful when present, not required in the doses a bowl of rice delivers, and in any case protein raises insulin perfectly well on its own. A steak is not the insulin-free wasteland the bodybuilding forums imagine. It puts up a respectable response and does it without the crash at the far end.
When carbs genuinely do matter
Three cases, and it is worth being straight about them.
If you compete in something demanding repeated maximal efforts with little rest, a combat sport, rowing, a team sport, then glycogen is your limiting factor and you should eat accordingly. If your training is deliberately high-rep and breathless for an hour at a stretch, same answer. And if you are chasing the last two per cent on a competition stage, there are peaking protocols involving carbohydrate that are real and that work.
None of those describes the person asking whether they can build muscle without carbs. That person wants to get bigger and stronger in a gym four days a week, and for that person the answer is a flat no, you do not need them.
Why the first two weeks feel terrible
Because they usually do, and this is where most people quit and go back to telling everyone it did not work.
Every gram of glycogen in your muscle is holding roughly three grams of water alongside it. Drop the glycogen and the water leaves with it, so within days you look flatter in the mirror and read lighter on the scale. Neither number is muscle. Both of them come back.
At the same time your body is changing its main fuel supplier, and during the handover the gym feels heavy and your usual weights feel like somebody has been adding plates while you were in the car park.
Give it a fortnight. Strength returns, and it returns on a far steadier supply than the one that had you rummaging for something sweet at four o’clock. Judge the whole thing at week six. Nothing worth having has ever reported for duty on day three.
What to actually do
Eat 0.8 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight, every day, from animals. Eat enough fat to have the energy to train, which on a meat-based diet mostly means not being frightened of the fat that arrives attached to the meat. Train heavy, take your sets near failure, and rest properly between them. Add creatine, because it is the one supplement that earns its money, it is not a carbohydrate, and it tops up the exact system your heavy sets are running on. I used to take dextrose around training and swapped it for ten grams of creatine a day without losing anything, which is the short version of a longer experiment written up in workout carbs on carnivore.
Then stop thinking about it.
