Five Protein Myths, And The Receipts

~2 min read

Somebody asked me last week how much protein they should be having, and then, before I could answer, told me they were already spacing it out at 30 grams a meal so none of it went to waste. This is what six years of watching the same five myths get repeated does to a man. So here they are, laid out, with the receipts.

The 30 gram ceiling came from studies that switched the tracers off after four hours. Maastricht left them running for twelve, gave men 100 grams in a single sitting, and watched them build muscle off it all evening.

One. The anabolic window.

Thirty minutes to get the shake down or the session was wasted. The 2013 meta-analysis found the effect disappeared the moment you accounted for the shake groups simply eating more protein overall. A 2017 trial gave 21 trained men 25 grams before or after lifting. No difference.

Two. Thirty grams a meal is the cap.

Trommelen, 2023: 100 grams produced a bigger and longer anabolic response than 25, still running past the twelve hour mark, with a negligible amount burned off as waste. The Sunday joint was never a rounding error.

Three. Protein wrecks your kidneys.

Twenty-eight trials, 1,358 people, no adverse effect on filtration rate in anyone with working kidneys. The scare came from a 1982 hypothesis about diseased kidneys, applied to the healthy population for four decades by people who never went back and looked.

Four. 0.8 grams per kilo is plenty.

That figure is a floor for avoiding deficiency, built on nitrogen balance arithmetic the field now admits is limited. Run the isotope method instead and the requirement lands at 1.2, and no lower past 65, which is precisely when appetite fades and the muscle starts walking out the door.

Five. Plant protein counts the same.

Whole grain wheat scores around 0.45 for digestible amino acids. Milk and whey clear 1.0. The gram on the label and the gram in your quad are different animals entirely.

Every one of these sells something. The window sells the shake you must have within the hour. The cap sells four tubs where one steak would do. The kidney scare sells the fear that keeps a man ordering the pasta.
