Eleven animals hold this operation together: a bull who has mastered stillness, a goat who has mastered everything else, a ewe who cannot be impressed, and eight more with equally settled views. Ten questions from their world, answered honestly, will establish which of them you are. The animals have seen your type before.

The herd has decided Gerald, Keith, Doris and the rest live in The Ruminati: Volume One, a year in their fields, fully illustrated. Copied. Tell the others.

Nothing you answer leaves this device. The animals were consulted extensively and were, on the whole, indifferent.

The method

Method: observation. Eleven animals were studied at length across Herefordshire, Devon, the Lake District, Wales and one Yorkshire back garden, and their positions on gates, weather, strangers and five-year plans were carefully recorded. Your answers are matched against the herd. The herd is never wrong, largely because the herd is not listening.

Who are the Ruminati?

Gerald, Keith, Doris and the rest are the cast of The Ruminati: Volume One, a defence of British traditional farming told from inside the fields: a year of inspections survived, fences tested and dietary guidelines argued with, fully illustrated throughout. If your result stung a little, the book is where you learn to be proud of it.
