What ten thousand years of bones have been trying to tell us
Consider, for a moment, the humble skeleton.
It cannot be lobbied. It does not receive research grants from the soy industry. It has never appeared on a podcast to promote its new book about plant-based longevity. It just sits there, in its glass case in its museum, holding the shape of a life, and telling you exactly what that life was made of.
Bone is a biological ledger. Every year of growth leaves a record: how much protein was available, how well the body processed it, whether the raw materials were there in sufficient quantity and quality to build a full human being. You cannot retrospectively alter the record. You cannot claim the skeleton would have been taller if only the methodology had been different. The numbers are in the ground. They have been in the ground for thousands of years. And they do not care about your dietary politics.
What follows is their evidence.
I. The Palaeolithic Peak
The Cro-Magnon people, the anatomically modern humans who spread across Europe from roughly 40,000 years ago, were substantially taller than the average person walking around a modern European city today. Male skeletons from the Upper Palaeolithic suggest average heights in the region of 5’10” to 5’11”. Female skeletons track at around 5’5″ to 5’6″. These were large, well-built people with broad shoulders, dense bones, and cranial capacity that met or exceeded our own.
They were also, without exception, apex hunters. Megafauna hunters. Mammoth, bison, reindeer, aurochs: these were not supplements to the diet. They were the diet. The isotopic record, which analyses the chemical signatures left in bone collagen and tells you precisely where a creature sat in the food chain, places Cro-Magnon humans squarely at the top. They ate meat in enormous quantities, they ate organ tissue, they ate fat, and they did so for hundreds of generations.
The result was a skeleton that looked as though it had been designed by someone who actually wanted humans to be functional.
This is the baseline. Before agriculture. Before the grain store and the bread queue and the dietary guideline. Before anyone decided that the fundamental problem with the human body was that it was not eating enough legumes. This is what we looked like when we were left to get on with it.

II. What Agriculture Did to Us
Around 10,000 BC, in the Fertile Crescent, something went wrong.
It did not look like it was going wrong at the time. It looked, in fact, like a rather clever idea. Wild grasses could be cultivated. Surplus food could be stored. Populations could grow. Civilisation, in the most literal sense, could begin. The experiment of settled agriculture launched itself with considerable fanfare, and the skeletons it left behind have been settling the argument ever since.
Within a few thousand years of agriculture’s spread across the Near East, Europe, and Asia, average male height dropped by roughly four to five inches. Not at the edge of the distribution. At the average. A species that had spent tens of thousands of years growing to nearly six feet found itself, within a geologically trivial timespan, averaging closer to 5’5″.
This is the single most dramatic involuntary nutritional experiment in the history of the species, and almost nobody talks about it. The curriculum will tell your children about the wonders of the Neolithic Revolution: the settlements, the pottery, the early writing systems, the foundations of modern civilisation. It will not linger on the concurrent skeletal collapse. It will not mention that the archaeologists who dig up these early agricultural sites consistently find shorter people, and that those people’s bones carry the signature of chronic nutritional stress their hunter-gatherer predecessors simply did not exhibit.
The food changed. Meat became scarce or intermittent. Grain became the foundation. And the body, which runs on a very specific set of amino acids in a very specific configuration, faithfully recorded the downgrade.

III. The Medieval Floor
The suppression did not lift. For millennia, it did not lift.
Medieval English males averaged around 5’5″ to 5’7″. Subsisting primarily on pottage, bread, and whatever could be scavenged from the margins of a feudal food system that had no particular interest in their wellbeing, the peasant population of England sat well below its biological potential for generation after generation.
It would be remiss not to note what was happening above their heads while they were shrinking. The ruling class ate differently. They ate beef, venison, pork, game birds, aged cheese, salted fish. The medieval aristocracy was, predictably, taller than the peasantry it governed. The relationship between protein access and physical stature was not invisible to contemporaries; it was simply regarded as the natural order of things.
And then someone formalised it.
The Forest Laws of Norman England, codified under William I in the 1080s, designated a third of the country’s land as the king’s personal hunting ground. Killing a deer carried the death penalty. Maiming one was punishable by blinding and castration. A peasant could live on the edge of a forest teeming with protein and starve legally while the gamekeeper rode past.

The centuries of codified meat restriction left a biological signature in the remains of the people it was applied to. You can measure it. It fits in a museum case. The case has a label.
IV. The Tallest People Who Ever Lived
In the mid-19th century, a series of European explorers, military men, and artists made their way onto the Great Plains of North America and encountered something they struggled to find adequate language for.
The Plains nations, the Cheyenne, the Sioux, the Comanche, the Crow, were physically unlike any population these travellers had previously encountered. George Catlin, the American painter who spent years among the Plains peoples in the 1830s and documented them with meticulous care, described warriors of remarkable stature and physical completeness. Army measurements taken in the 1860s and 1870s found Cheyenne men averaging around 5’10” to 5’11” at a time when the US Army recruits conducting those measurements averaged closer to 5’6″. Multiple independent surveys across different nations returned similar figures.
These were, for a period, almost certainly the tallest people on earth.
Their diet was nearly pure animal food. Bison was the axis around which everything turned. Not bison occasionally, as a Sunday treat, in moderation, as part of a diverse and balanced relationship with ancient grains. Bison constantly. Bison in every form: roasted, dried, rendered to fat, ground with berries into pemmican, organs eaten raw at the kill site because the hunters understood, without the benefit of nutritional science, that certain parts were valuable and should not be wasted. A single adult Cheyenne warrior might consume ten to twelve pounds of bison meat in a day. There were sixty million bison on the plains. The arithmetic was generous.
These populations were lean, fast, and visibly healthy by every external marker that 19th-century observers could assess. Their skeletal record placed them at heights their grain-fed European contemporaries could not approach. The physical evidence of what unrestricted access to the most complete protein source on the continent produces, across generations of human development, was walking around in broad daylight, and the men sent to survey them wrote it down.
Then the US government looked at what was keeping them that way and decided to remove it.
The destruction of the bison herds was not an accident of westward expansion. It was policy, understood and articulated clearly by the men directing it. General Philip Sheridan said the following when Texas legislators considered passing a bill to protect the remaining bison: the hunters had done more in the last two years to settle the question than the entire regular army had done in thirty, because they were destroying the Indians’ commissary. Destroy the food supply. Destroy the people.
The logic was clean. The execution was thorough. Sixty million animals reduced to approximately a thousand by 1890. The largest deliberate removal of a food source in recorded human history, accomplished within a single lifetime, for the explicit purpose of making a population metabolically dependent on the government that was dismantling their world.
The height data from Plains nations in the reservation era tells the rest of the story. Within a generation of enforced sedentism and grain-based government rations, average stature fell. The bones kept recording. They still are.
There is a straight line from Sheridan’s commissary logic to the Enclosure Acts to the Forest Laws. The mechanism shifts. The outcome holds. Remove access to animal protein, and wait. The skeleton will do the rest.

V. How It Works
One quick clarification, because the biology deserves acknowledgement even if it need not dominate the room.
Height during childhood and adolescence is largely a function of protein quality: specifically, the availability of all essential amino acids in sufficient quantity to support long bone growth, mediated by insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and driven in particular by leucine, which activates the mTOR pathway that tells the body to build tissue. Animal protein provides all essential amino acids in the right ratios, with superior bioavailability, in a single food source.
Plant proteins do not, and constructing an adequate amino acid profile from plants requires effort and variety that a developing skeleton cannot wait for. The growth plates have a window. They fuse. Whatever height was achieved during that window is the height that gets recorded. Permanently. In bone. In a museum case. With a label.

VI. Japan, 1945 to 1980
In 1945, the average Japanese male stood approximately 5’3″. The diet was predominantly plant-based: rice, vegetables, some fish, very little meat, almost no dairy.
Under American occupation, and subsequently through a deliberate government nutritional programme in the 1950s, Japan introduced school milk, increased meat consumption, and began actively encouraging animal protein intake at a population level. The results were not subtle. Between 1950 and 1980, average male height in Japan increased by approximately three inches. The same genetic population, on the same island, in the same climate, eating differently, producing a different skeleton within a single generation.
This is as close to a controlled experiment as human nutritional science ever gets. One variable changed. The height followed.
Contemporary Japan has maintained those gains. The Japanese government did not respond to its population’s growth by suggesting they return to the pre-war dietary pattern on environmental grounds. They noticed what worked, and they kept doing it. There is a lesson here for anyone paying attention, and apparently several governments that are not.
VII. North Korea and South Korea
In 1945, the Korean peninsula was one country with one population and one gene pool that had been developing in the same geographic conditions for thousands of years. Then it was divided, and the two halves were fed differently.
South Korea modernised its food supply. Animal protein became widely accessible. Meat and dairy consumption rose substantially through the second half of the 20th century. North Korea, under a succession of catastrophically mismanaged food policies, culminating in a famine that killed an estimated one to three million people in the 1990s, subsisted on grain rations when it could get them and considerably less when it could not.
Today, South Korean men average approximately 5’8″ to 5’9″. North Korean men average closer to 5’4″ to 5’5″. The difference, across the same genetic population separated by a border and a food policy, is three to four inches.
No one has been able to explain this through any variable other than nutrition, because no other significant variable differs between the populations at the genetic level. The border runs through the same latitude. The climate is identical on both sides. The separation happened too recently for meaningful genetic drift. What differs is what they were fed, and the bones, as ever, kept the record.
It is, arguably, the cleanest demonstration in existence of what animal protein deprivation does to a population over time. It is running in real time. It produces numbers that any first-year student could interpret. It has not made it into any official dietary guideline anywhere on earth.
VIII. The Dutch
The Netherlands is the tallest country on earth. Dutch men average just over six feet. Dutch women average around 5’7″. They have held this distinction for long enough that it has become a cultural identifier, the source of jokes, the thing everyone knows about the Netherlands alongside tulips and an admirably relaxed approach to several recreational pursuits.
What is slightly less discussed is why.
The Netherlands has one of the highest per capita consumptions of dairy and animal protein in Europe. The Dutch eat cheese in quantities that would concern a cardiologist of the older school, and seem to concern no one who actually lives in the Netherlands. They eat meat regularly. They drink milk. They have done so for generations, on a relatively small, flat piece of reclaimed land not especially suited to arable farming but excellently suited to dairy production, which is perhaps the universe’s subtle way of suggesting which direction to lean.
Compare this to the average heights of populations with predominantly plant-based dietary traditions. The correlation does not require advanced statistical analysis. You can see it by standing in a room containing people from different countries and looking around.
The Dutch did not become the world’s tallest population by accident, or by genetics alone, or by some quirk of North Sea air. They became the world’s tallest population by eating animal foods in consistent abundance across generations, and their skeleton is the evidence.
IX. The Long Read-Out
The timeline assembles itself without editorial assistance.
Palaeolithic carnivores: nearly six feet tall. Early agricultural populations: five and a half feet and falling. Medieval peasants eating pottage while the king’s deer grazed in the legally inaccessible forest fifty yards from their door: five and a half feet and staying there.
Plains nations eating bison unrestricted: nearly six feet again, the Palaeolithic peak reasserting itself in a different hemisphere and a different century, because the conditions were the same. Post-war Japan, given animal protein at scale: three inches in a generation. Two Koreas, same genes, different food supply: four inches apart. The Dutch, eating dairy and meat in a cold flat country, standing six feet tall and apparently unbothered.
This is not a collection of coincidences. It is one variable, tracked across ten thousand years, producing one consistent result. Animal protein produces tall, structurally complete human beings. Its absence produces shorter ones. The exceptions are rare enough to be scientifically uninteresting.
What is interesting is how the timeline ends.
For most of the past ten millennia, meat restriction was imposed. It required apparatus. The Forest Laws needed enforcement. The Enclosure Acts needed Parliament. Sheridan needed rifles and a continental railway network and the explicit backing of the federal government to remove sixty million animals from a landscape in forty years. The mechanisms of protein restriction were large, visible, and expensive. They left records. They are documented in considerable historical detail, because powerful people did not particularly bother to conceal the logic.
Today, the restriction is voluntary. A population that has, for the first time in ten thousand years, affordable and widespread access to the most nutrient-dense food in the history of the species, is being persuaded to surrender it. Not at gunpoint. Not through forest laws or enclosure acts. Through guilt, dressed up as environmental concern.
Through manufactured science, in which saturated fat causes heart disease until it doesn’t, and red meat causes cancer until the meta-analyses establishing this turn out to have been confounded by everything from smoking to socioeconomic status. Through the cultural prestige of plant-based eating, served up in Netflix documentaries, legitimised by institutional dietary guidelines, and relentlessly promoted by an industry that cannot patent a steak but can absolutely patent a soy protein isolate in a coloured wrapper that bleeds when you cut it.
The mechanism has changed entirely. The outcome is identical.
A meaningful portion of the population is voluntarily depriving the next generation of the building blocks their skeletons require, and the bones of the children who result will record it. Just as faithfully as the bones of a medieval serf in a glass case in the British Museum. With a card that reads 5’4″ and a date in the twelfth century and no further explanation, because no further explanation is required.
The skeleton already told you what it knows.
